Portfolio Assignment: Integrating Technology Into the Classroom
Now that you have considered the skills and dispositions needed to educate students who no longer need their instructors to give them information, it’s time to rethink the major function of your role in the classroom. Once a teacher gets away from dispensing knowledge, what is left? Teachers who have already made the transition to a facilitator spend the majority of their time developing unique and challenging assignments that require students to construct their own knowledge through collaborative problem solving. Teachers also dedicate portions of their time preparing the technology and tools that their students need to use in order to successfully complete their learning task. By the time they find themselves administering the lesson, the lion’s share of their work is done.
In this assignment, you will design a lesson that integrates one of the Web 2.0 tools introduced in this course (blogs, Wikis, or podcasts). The lesson design should incorporate an activity in which your students collaborate to solve a problem through their own research and critical thinking. The selected technology tool should be used by your students either during the collaborative process, or as a means of delivering the final product.
With these parameters in mind, develop a lesson for your classroom. Note: This is an essay assignment. Describe your lesson, addressing each of the assignment components below.
In your brainstorm, include:
The learning outcomes, skills, and content area objectives or standards the lesson should address (include both technology standards (NETS) and content standards)
A brief overview of the activity, including how you think that this activity will teach them 21st century skills
The steps that the students must follow to complete the activity, including how technology will be used by them
How you will manage this activity in your classroom. (How will you ensure that students have adequate time online? How will you evaluate their learning? How will you ensure equal collaboration by all students?)
Suggested assignment length: 1–2 pages
